Epidemiology (EPID)
The Department of Epidemiology (Head: Professor Dr. med. Gérard Krause) at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig is looking, at the earliest opportunity, for a Research Fellow, Epidemiologist (all genders) (100%) The position is to be filled for the further development and implementation of the Surveillance, Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (www.SORMAS.org) with a special focus on coronaviruses. SORMAS uses modern mobile information technologies for the early exposure and efficient containment of epidemics, especially in Africa, and is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Currently SORMAS is continuously used in over 370 districts in Ghana and Nigeria and covers a population of over a 75 million inhabitants. It was successfully used in the control of several parallel infectious disease outbreaks of. For the functional and geographic expansion of SORMAS we are looking for reinforcement of our team. The Department of Epidemiology at the HZI consists of about 40 employees. We investigate the fundamental relationships between the occurrence, spread and prevention of infectious diseases in the human population - in Germany and internationally. We work in the field of immunology and infection within the framework of the German National Cohort (www.nako.de) and operate a NAKO study Centre in Hannover. Within the German Center for Infection Research, we are active as „Translational Infrastructure Epidemiology“ (www.dzif.de). Together with the Hannover Medical School we run the structured PhD Programme „Epidemiology“ (www.helmholtz-hzi.de/phdepi).

TASKS

  • Scientific project coordination
  • Analysis of processes in the frame of epidemiologic surveillance and outbreak control and transfer of the processes into requirements for the software development
  • Content design of the software development of SORMAS
  • Conception, development and conduct of trainings for SORMAS
  • Scientific evaluation of SORMAS as well as epidemiological analysis with the data generated by SORMAS
  • Personal scientific analysis and publication as well as scientific supervision of international postgraduate students
  • Compiling applications for third party funding and project reports

PREREQUISITE

  • University degree in the area of public health, medicine, epidemiology, or informatics
  • A high level of independence, well-developed organizational skills and commitment
  • Ability to do coordination in an international team
  • Very good English language skills
  • Knowledge / experience in data management
  • Willingness and ability for planned, short non-European business trips (around 2-6/year)

THE FOLLOWING ACHIEVEMENTS/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE WOULD BE OF ADVANTAGE:

  • Practical experiences in Public Health Surveillance and Outbreak investigation
  • Qualification in the area of infection epidemiology (e.g. EPIET, EIS, PAE, MSc, MPH)
  • Knowledge and experiences in Informatics as well or eHealth
  • Experiences in the conception and performance of epidemiological studies including data protection and ethics
  • Knowledge and experiences in statistical and epidemiological methods
  • Doctorate or thematically related publication experiences
  • Experiences in procuring of third-party funding
  • Experiences in leadership and coordination in the multi-cultural context
  • Work experiences in Africa, Asia or Latin America

Further foreign language skills, especially French, German
