Within the Unit of Biostatistics, we are looking for an experienced Biostatistician.

The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, education and services at local, national and international levels. 950 people from 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH) investigates distribution and causes of infections and non-communicable diseases. To understand and promote the well-being of people in different cultural and environmental contexts, EPH applies various methods ranging from anthropology and social science to biostatistics and mathematical modelling as well as observational cohorts with biobanks. Within the Unit of Biostatistics, we are looking for an experienced Biostatistician.

Biostatistician (60-100%)

Your various responsibilities include:

  • Designing epidemiological and health systems studies
  • Statistical analysis of observational and trial data
  • Methodological supervision of MSc and PhD projects
  • Writing statistical analysis plans
  • Drafting and editing research manuscripts
  • Taking part in teaching activities

You should have the following experience and skills:

  • Strong statistical skills eg MSc or PhD in (bio)statistics, or PhD in another quantitative discipline
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in data analysis, ideally in an academic environment
  • An interest in working with environmental exposure and non-communicable disease data.
  • Good overview of epidemiological study designs and excellent statistical programming skills, and commitment to best practices in research, particularly computational reproducibility
  • Assertive personality; ability to make decisions and take responsibility. Ability to communicate effectively with researchers without quantitative backgrounds. Strong team spirit and willingness to share skills and knowledge with others
  • Proficiency in English, written and spoken
  • Desirable skills and experience: Ability to prioritise and work on multiple projects simultaneously; previous experience of statistical consulting; experience in research or implementation in low- and middle-income countries and experience with data from routine monitoring and registries.
