What's MAP?
MAP (malariaatlas.org) is a global collaboration of scientists and engineers working across mathematics, statistics, epidemiology and geography to collate the world’s largest repository of malaria data and use that data to parametrise sophisticated mathematical and statistical models to answer urgent policy questions.

We work closely with our partners (e.g. WHO, national malaria programs, CHAI, PMI) to ensure MAP’s research outputs are translated into policy recommendations which will ultimately contribute to malaria elimination. In addition to production of the official estimates of global malaria burden and extensive technical support to national malaria programs, we have a long track record of publications in top journals (Nature, Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine).

What will you be doing?
We are recruiting two postdoctoral scientists to join a new team at MAP in Perth, Western Australia. You will be working on a research and development team led by Dr Tasmin Symons (tasmin.symons@telethonkids.org.au) to develop/extend MAP’s modelling frameworks to answer urgent questions in malaria control (e.g. around the optimal use of interventions), as well as designing new modelling approaches to address long-standing open questions (e.g. what is the role of the changing human environment in Africa in observed trends in malaria?).

You’ll work collaboratively within the group based at the Telethon Kids Institute in Perth, including the groups within our Child Health Analytics Research Program working parallel to MAP on malaria ecology, Covid-19, and tuberculosis (https://www.telethonkids.org.au/our-research/brain-and-behaviour/child-health-analytics-research-program/ ).

You should apply if

1. You have (or are about to receive) a PhD in mathematics or statistics, or another similarly quantitative field
2. You have demonstrable skills in (at least one) field relevant to mathematical/geostatistical disease modelling – spatial statistics, Gaussian processes, ODEs/PDEs, time-series analysis, and/or related topics
3. You have strong programming skills in at least one of R/Python (or similar)
4. You are able to work independently and as part of a wider team
5. You’d like to live in Australia’s sunniest city (visa sponsorship will be considered for international appointments – MAP is a very diverse group, and most of the team is from overseas)

Additional information
Contract type: 2 years fixed term, with possibility to renew subject to funding
Work pattern: 100% time / 1 FTE
Benefits: Funds for travel and conferences are available.
Salary: $89,296-$93,617AUD, subject to experience + additional 11% superannuation
Telethon Kids Institute offers salary packaging to employees, effectively increasing take-home-pay by about $5000AUD a year.
