This role exists within the Science and Technology Group of the Emergency Response Department(ERD S&T) of Public Health England (PHE). The incumbent in the post will assist in the development and implementation of mathematical models and undertake operational research that supports preparedness and response for a variety of important public health issues. Collaboration with partners and stakeholders in the Department of Health and Social Care, the National Institute for Health Research’s Health Protection Research Units and other academic groups will be expected.

We are looking for candidates with skill sets spanning mathematical, statistical and computational disciplines. We would expect the successful candidate to have a first degree involving high mathematical/statistical content and the programming skills necessary to turn theory into high-quality operational tools.

A higher degree or substantially similar industry experience would be of benefit. Your work will assist in underpinning decision support tools that might be relevant to future UK public health. You will assess, develop and document appropriate mathematical models that address strategic research questions arising from disease mitigation policy issues. You should be able to work well in a team towards shared goals, and have good communication and technical report writing skills. Postgraduate experience in modelling infectious disease processes would be a major advantage as would experience in operational research. The ERD S&T group is a multidisciplinary group that includes infectious disease biologists and epidemiologists, mathematical modellers, behavioural scientists, specialists in geographic information systems, and scientific computing.
