Department of Epidemiology

Assistant or Associate Professor of Epidemiology

The Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) invites applications from candidates for a tenure-track faculty position as assistant or associate professor of epidemiology with a focus on the quantitative study of infectious diseases in populations.

We seek candidates who will contribute to the department’s role as a center for epidemiologic research and education with a focus on the quantitative study of infectious diseases in populations. We especially invite candidates who demonstrate methodological innovation in such areas as causal methods, genomic or other -omic approaches, or artificial intelligence and machine learning. Scholars conducting active fieldwork would be preferred and an emphasis on HIV would be a strong plus. Candidates should have enthusiasm for departmental engagement across several institutions: the Harvard Chan School, Harvard Medical School, and Harvard teaching hospitals. In addition to having a keen interest in the above research areas, candidates should be enthusiastic about teaching, training, and mentorship through our graduate programs as well as fostering principles of diversity, inclusion, and belonging throughout their research and teaching activities. Responsibilities will include empirical research in epidemiology and active participation in teaching and in the direction of training programs.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D., M.D., or S.D., as well as graduate-level training in epidemiology or a closely related field or substantial experience with the development or application of epidemiologic methods in infectious diseases. Candidates are required to have their doctoral degree by the time the appointment begins, and academic rank will be determined in accordance with the successful candidate’s experience. For the purposes of filling this position, we intend to take a broad view of closely related fields, including but not limited to such areas as ecology and evolution of infectious diseases; disease modeling; and computational biology or data science as applied to the study of human health outcomes. Publication records can be in epidemiology or a closely related field.

The Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard Chan School is committed to enriching the academic experience of our talented students by providing the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to address current and future challenges in public health and clinical medicine. Our faculty are global leaders in the study of the frequency, distribution, and determinants of disease in humans, known for their innovative approaches to the epidemiology of cancer, cardiovascular disease, reproductive and perinatal diseases, and other chronic diseases, as well as in epidemiologic methodology. All of this work is strengthened by deep foundations in theory and application and broad interdepartmental engagement.

In addition to pursuing groundbreaking global research initiatives, we educate and prepare future medical leaders and practitioners as part of our mission to ignite positive changes in the quality of health across the world. The department is invested in strong mentorship within a dynamic culture of collaboration and innovation. Our unique and diverse community provides unparalleled collaborative opportunities with academic departments across Harvard and at many world-class Harvard-affiliated hospitals.

The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health seeks to recruit, develop, promote, and retain the world’s best scholars. We are committed to upholding the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our hiring and promotion processes. Women and individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
