Spatial Disease Ecologist for research on bat-borne viruses in South Africa
EcoHealth Alliance is seeking a spatial disease ecologist to support research into bat-borne virus ecology research in South Africa. This New York-based position is ideal for a recent PhD with expertise in spatial ecology including understanding animal movement and host/pathogen ecology. In this position, the spatial ecologist will play a central role in a multi-institutional project integrating data and shaping analytical approaches and publications. There will be opportunities to also engage in a diverse array of research programs at EcoHealth Alliance and opportunity to collaborate across teams and develop new projects. Successful applicants will have strong communications skills and creativity to derive insights from diverse streams of data generated from field, lab, and behavioral studies of wildlife and humans. Responsibilities include providing technical input into study design and project implementation, data collection and analysis, training and mentoring junior scientists, and grant and manuscript writing. Above all, passion for understanding the process of zoonotic disease emergence is key. Some international travel and flexibility in hours to collaborate with partners in different time zones is required.
The position will be based at EcoHealth Alliance HQ in New York. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, this position may begin as a remote assignment, with the expectation of ultimately transitioning into the New York office and international travel.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborate with EcoHealth Alliance scientists, partners, and associates under a multi-year disease ecology research project in South Africa under EHA’s Vice President for Science and Outreach
Participate in study development, implementation, data analysis, writing, and training within the project
Work with EcoHealth Alliance scientists to develop new scientific research projects
Develop new funding applications
Write manuscripts, project reports and white papers
Represent EcoHealth Alliance at scientific meetings and to project partners
Participate in outreach to donors, potential collaborators, and other institutions at conferences, scientific, and public meetings
QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD in Ecology or Epidemiology or equivalent work experience
Prior research experience with spatial and spatiotemporal analytical methods, inclusive of working land-use and remote sensing data, analysis of animal movement/telemetry data
Experience working with R
Positive attitude towards and creativity for complex problems
Strong sense of team spirit and cultural sensitivity
Excellent written and verbal communication skills , including experience writing scientific publications
Strong organizational and project management skills and ability to work independently
Fluency in written and spoken English
ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience collaborating with research teams across multiple countries
Strong background in wildlife epidemiology or disease ecology
Experience in mechanistic epidemiological (e.g. SIR) modeling
Experience working with genomic and phylogenetic data
SALARY RANGE: $75,000-$85,000
