Senior Research Associate in Health Infectious Disease Mathematical Modelling

Job number ACAD103021
Division/School Bristol Medical School
Contract type Open ended contract staff
Working pattern Full time
Salary £36,613 - £41,212 per annum
Closing date for applications 13-Dec-2017

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Associate to work Bristol Medical School: Population Health Sciences.

The post is funded through grants from USAID and Australian Medical Research Council, and is meant to provide a good opportunity for obtaining research training or experience. The post will develop new infectious disease models on the transmission of HIV and HCV amongst female sex workers, people who inject drugs and other high-risk groups in sub-Saharan Africa and Australia. The project in sub-Saharan Africa will evaluate the role of these high-risk groups in driving HIV transmission in this region, while the Australian modelling will consider the role of incarceration on HCV transmission amongst people who inject drugs.

You will join a collaborative team of mathematical modellers, epidemiologists, social scientists and health economists interested in the transmission dynamics of blood borne viruses, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and other infections. As part of these projects you will be primarily involved in the technical aspect of the modelling, and will collaborate with other modellers, economists and epidemiologists involved in this and other projects.

You will need a strong mathematical background with preferably a PhD degree in a relevant quantitative subject. We are looking for an applicant with experience in infectious disease mathematical modelling. You must have experience of developing and programming complex dynamical models, the ability to design and analyse large scale modelling experiments involving data and uncertainty. Skills in reviewing the non-modelling literature and undertaking data analyses (using STATA or similar packages) to develop and parameterise your models would be desirable. You will have strong IT and communication skills and work effectively within a team environment that includes non-mathematicians. It is desirable that you have an interest in the health issues of others.

The post is full-time, although part-time will be considered.
