Research software developer/Senior scientist: topics in phylogenetics, phylogeography, infectious disease, genomic epidemiology
Research Software Developer/Senior Scientist, Simon Fraser University
The MAGPIE group (www.sfu.ca/magpie) at SFU is seeking a senior scientist/research software developer to lead and support the development and implementation of mathematical methods in infection and evolution. Key thematic areas for this work will include genomic epidemiology, phylogenetics, phylodynamics, stochastic simulation models and related mathematical and statistical methods, particularly as these relate to pathogens.
You will be joining a vibrant multidisciplinary team with a broad range of interests, working at the interface of mathematics, infectious disease, evolution and public health. The group is based at the SFU campus in the greater Vancouver area, British Columbia, Canada. We anticipate that the candidate will contribute to the daily activities of the research group, including supervising trainees, pursuing research and software development aims, presenting work at meetings and workshops and participating in collaborative projects. We would facilitate regular interaction with teams of research software developers at SFU and beyond.
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, or a similarly computational field, with strong interest and experience in developing software in a research context. We seek a candidate with: experience with the development of research computing software; excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent communication skills; expert knowledge of programming languages used for research computing. Experience in phylogenetics, genomic epidemiology, population genetics or related topics is desired.
This is a 3-year position with the potential for extension. Salary will be commensurate with skills and qualifications. Funding is available for attending conferences and workshops, organizing events and other research and professional activities.
Candidates should submit their CV with a cover letter, along with a research statement outlining scientific interests. Please send these application materials as a single PDF document to Mark Campbell (mark_campbell@sfu.ca). We will begin to review applications on November 15, 2022. The start date is negotiable.
