Wellcome’s Infectious Disease team has a long-term remit to fund a portfolio of activities to ensure the world is protected against different types of infectious disease, and the threat of disease-escalation now and in the future. We bring together our diverse expertise across science, innovation and society to build a world that is better prepared to prevent and eliminate infectious diseases. We engage globally and work with disadvantaged communities.

We are looking to recruit a Research Manager to sit within the Modelling section of the Health Systems & Environment team. We are currently building a portfolio of modelling activities that focuses on:
• Modelling transmission dynamics and control strategies to help understand sources and drivers of infectious diseases
• Investigates the cost-effectiveness of interventions and builds evidence base for adoption
• Develops and encourages adoption of mathematical modelling tools and promotes quantitative decision-making, particularly in low- and middle-income countries

For this role, we are looking for an individual with an understanding of how modelling can be used in the areas outlined above and how it can be used to support science to tackle health challenges particularly those in low resource settings. Experience of funding/working in a low-and-middle income country is an asset.

The Research Manager will work with the wider team to implement projects and activities in the specific areas of focus such as: implementing and assessing funding calls and commissions, convening groups, drafting reports and liaising with internal and external groups and individuals as required. This role does not have line management responsibilities, but you will need experience in project management.

In this role you will:
• Contribute to the effective delivery of work that may range from convening, to making funding decisions and producing reports/reviews- providing specific technical expertise as relevant.
• Maintain a thorough understanding of the breadth of work of the Modelling team, sharing knowledge and expertise to contribute to the work of the division and throughout Wellcome. 
• Ensure Wellcome has a good understanding of the nature of our funding portfolio, covering research progress, research culture and D&I, and an active relationship with applicants and staff on grants so all funded researchers feel a greater sense of partnership with Wellcome. 
• Participate in the selection of external advisors to support decision-making for the Infectious Disease area, ensuring external advice is of the highest quality.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of external stakeholders, including other funders, partner organisations, and members of the research community and to be able to clearly communicate the work of the Infectious Disease team and its funding initiatives to internal and external audiences.
• Contribute to the initiation, ongoing management and conclusion of Modelling major initiatives and awards acting as the main point of contact for defined projects, liaising with external stakeholders or partners on straightforward issues. 
• Matrix management of projects within the Infectious Disease team and alongside other line functions to deliver on projects and achieve the outcomes of the strategic area.  
• Manage workload to meet deadlines and deliver timely, high quality self-contained outputs, with limited support.  
• Regularly monitor project team activity against milestones and objectives and report to senior leadership on progress and delivery of specific projects.  
• Use internal and external networks to independently seek advice and input from experts as needed. 
• Communicate Wellcome’s position accurately and can support with key arguments and evidence. 

We are a looking for an excellent communicator at all levels with excellent project management skills. To be successful in this role you will have:
• An advanced degree in a relevant subject area.
• The ability to demonstrate a breadth of expertise in a relevant field through work experience in an academic, industrial, funding agency or charity setting.   
• Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communities  
• The ability to employ diverse approaches to effectively communicate complex information to individuals and groups from a range of different background and different seniority levels.
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage a fluctuating, heavy, workload and competing priorities
• Strong verbal communication skills. Adept at delivering presentations 
• Well-developed writing skills with ability to synthesise information conveying key points clearly and concisely 
• IT literacy with experience of using database and other computerised systems, including Microsoft Office products 
• Experience/knowledge of managing projects in an academic or industry setting.
