We are recruiting a Research Fellow in Infectious Disease Modelling to lead development of epidemiological and economic models of novel strategies for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in low and middle-income settings. The post is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the UK’s Medical Research Council. It involves close working with country partners in the Gambia and Vietnam, as well as with other modelling groups in Canada and the USA.

The postholder will be part of a growing team of vaccine epidemiologists, modellers and economists at LSHTM. The group has funding from a range of sources including the National Institute for Health Research (UK); Medical Research Council (UK); Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and the World Health Organization. HPV modelling is a key part of this research, and we have frequently provided evidence to the UK’s Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), WHO’s Strategic Group of Experts on Immunisation (SAGE) and the board of Gavi. Other HPV-related grants are in submission or preparation and the post-holder may have the opportunity to be part of these in the future.

The successful applicant must have a PhD in mathematical modelling, health economics, statistics, epidemiology or another relevant discipline with a strong quantitative component; experience in constructing mathematical models of infectious diseases; experience in understanding and analysing epidemiological data; ability to produce high-quality writing for publication in peer-reviewed journals; ability to communicate findings for both academic and policy audiences; ability to work with colleagues from a range of countries and cultural backgrounds. Experience working in public health contexts, ideally in low- or middle-income country settings would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post-holder will be based in London, with occasional travel to Vietnam, the Gambia and elsewhere.

The post is available immediately and funded until February 2020, with the opportunity for renewal subject to further funding. The appointment will be made on LSHTM’s Research Fellow scale Grade 6, £38,533 to £43,759 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
