Research Fellow position in influenza/flavivirus modelling
Applications are invited to join a team conducting research using mathematical models to understand how immunity and social behavior drive infectious disease outbreaks. The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and will be based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The post-holder will be supervised by Dr Adam Kucharski and will join a highly successful and supportive group at the Centre for the Mathematical Modelling (CMMID).
The post involves combining mathematical models with novel surveillance, serological, and social behaviour data to examine the dynamics of antigenically variable pathogens such as influenza and dengue. As well as investigating individual-level immune responses to such viruses, the work aims to predict how these responses shape pathogen invasion and transmission at the population level. This will involve the development and parameterisation of a range of dynamic models and will make use of some of the best available data for influenza and flaviviruses, including ongoing field studies across multiple continents. The post-holder will also have considerable scope to develop their own research within this area, in collaboration with colleagues at LSHTM and international partners.
The successful applicant will have a PhD in mathematical modelling, statistics, epidemiology or another relevant discipline with a strong quantitative component. Candidates should have proficient knowledge of a programming language for mathematical or statistical modelling, such as R, Python or C/C++, and be committed to open research and demonstrate experience in mathematical modelling, preferably of epidemic-prone infectious diseases. Further particulars are included in the attached job description.
The post is full-time and fixed term, funded until 31st July 2021. The salary will be on the Academic scale, Grade 6 scale in the range £39,304 - £44,634 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service.Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
