Research Fellow or Assistant Professor in Infections Disease Dynamics

A position is available to join a team conducting research on modelling to inform decision making in real time during infectious disease outbreaks. The post-holder will be supervised by Prof Sebastian Funk and will join a successful and supportive group (https://epiforecasts.io) at the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases (CMMID) within LSHTM.

The main aim of the project is to develop, improve and apply models for improving situational awareness and informing data collection in outbreaks via data analysis, nowcasting and forecasting. For this project we are particularly interested in studies that validate the use of state-of-the-art approaches and/or compare different approaches for their performance in informing public health. Part of the job will be to interact with collaborators on needs in surveillance and analytics and how they are best met.

At Research Fellow level the post-holder must have a postgraduate degree, ideally a doctoral degree, in a relevant topic and at Assistant Professor a doctoral degree in a relevant topic such as epidemiology, mathematics, physics, statistics, bioinformatics or computational biology. Strong experience in R and/or Julia programming and commitment to conducting science openly and reproducibly is essential. Further particulars are included in the job description.

The post is full-time 35 hours per week, 1.0 FTE and fixed-term until 29 September 2025 with potential for extension subject to funding. The post is funded by the Wellcome Trust and the US CDC/CFA and available immediately.

The salary will be on the Academic Pathway salary scale in the range £43,947-£49,908 Grade 6 for Research Fellow or £51,299-£58,723 Grade 7 for Assistant Professor per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part-time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at LSHTM.
