Research Associate in Modelling the impact of peri-urbanisation on Rift Valley fever virus transmission in Tanzania
Vacancy Ref: 080847
Salary Grade 7: £36,382 - £40,927 per annum
We have an opportunity for a Research Associate in Modelling the impact of peri-urbanisation on Rift Valley fever virus transmission in Tanzania, based at the University of Glasgow and supported by Professor Sarah Cleaveland and Dr Paul Johnson. The post holder will make a leading contribution to this NERC funded project “Identifying inter-epizootic transmission routes of Rift Valley fever virus in Tanzania to inform targeted control strategies for outbreak response” working with a collaboration between the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and University of Glasgow (UoG) in the UK and the Vector and Vector-borne Diseases Institute (VVBDI) in Tanzania.
The post holder will contribute technical expertise in epidemiological modelling. In collaboration with modellers at the lead institution (LSTM) you will develop mechanistic models of RVFV transmission to identify sources of inter-epizootic (the periods between outbreaks) transmission and risk to humans. Models will be calibrated and validated with data produced from targeted field surveys, and will be used to design and assess integrated control strategies against RVFV epizootics that consider the sources of inter-epizootic transmission.
Candidates should have up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in statistics, epidemiological modelling and scientific computing, including coding using R.
The post is full-time and has funding until 30 November 2025.
Any further enquiries on this post may be directed to Dr Paul Johnson, Paul.Johnson@glasgow.ac.uk
