Research Assistant to support multiple projects in disease ecology, forecasting, and open-source software

EcoHealth Alliance seeks a highly organized, collaborative, and self-driven Research Assistant to support multiple projects in disease ecology, forecasting, and open-source software. This half administrative, half research position is based in our computational sciences group and is an excellent opportunity for experience and training in disease-related data science at a rapidly growing NGO with diversely funded scientific research programs around the world focused on conservation and zoonotic disease emergence. The research assistant will conduct literature reviews, data source discovery, data curation, and data quality assurance, assist in writing manuscripts and grants, preparing presentations and reports, and other project administrative tasks. They will work with team members to organize and automate manual tasks and receive training in data science skills such as R programming. A passion for One Health research, a collaborative spirit, and enthusiasm for organization and efficiency are key.

This position is based in New York City with a remote (including international) option. Visa sponsorship and moving expenses are available for hires to move to work primarily in-office. Remotes hires must be available to collaborate with team members via email, chat, and video calls during US EST business hours and be available as needed to coordinate with collaborators in other international time zones. The position will require regular travel to the New York office several times per year for a remote candidate.

Description and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Principal Scientist, the Research Assistant will:
-- Conduct literature reviews to harvest and generate data sets as well as developing detailed background for grant proposals, scientific manuscripts and other project needs
-- Manage and assist with data curation using GitHub, R, ODK, and AirTable
-- Assist with data analyses and produce data summaries and visualizations
-- Assist with generating high quality scientific manuscripts for publication
-- Assist with project management, including budgeting and invoicing, regular reporting, and communication with funding agencies and partners
-- Work with team members to organize project materials and automate project and administrative processes
-- Identify tools, software, and processes to better organize and manage project data and processes
-- Support developing new scientific research projects and research proposals on pandemic preparedness, emerging disease ecology, and data science, including grant writing, data management planning, budgeting, preparing required forms and documents for proposal submission, and partner coordination
-- Engage openly and respectfully with EcoHealth Alliance scientists and partners across multiple projects as required and at all stages, from development to implementation to publication/communication
-- Provide other administrative support for the Principal Scientist and computational sciences team as needed
-- Travel as needed to attend domestic or international conferences, project meetings, other events
-- Represent EcoHealth Alliance professionally and work closely with stakeholders and collaborators
-- Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
-- B.S. or B.A. and 2 years of similar work experience, or a Masters degree in Ecology, Epidemiology, Public Health, Data Science, Statistics, Biology, or a related field
-- Excellent project management and organizational skills, including proven ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines while working with multiple teams
-- Experience with scientific literature reviews
-- Experience with data management and basic statistical analyses
-- Experience managing budgets
-- Strong technological skills, including MS Office and Google suites and project management tools
-- Interest in and aptitude for adopting new technology
-- Ability to rapidly self-teach and adopt new tools and processes
-- Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
-- Positive attitude towards solving complex problems
-- Strong sense of team spirit and cultural sensitivity
-- Fluency in English

Additional Desired Qualifications
-- Experience managing projects in field, lab, or analytical work as part of a scientific research group
-- Experience managing projects supported by foundations and US government agencies
-- Experience with R programming for data analysis
-- Experience with command-line tools, version control (git), and project automation (targets/GitHub Actions)
-- Experience with tools in our data management stack, including Open Data Kit, AirTable, GitHub, and Dolt

Compensation will be $55,000-$65,000 USD annually, commensurate with skills and experience.
