Research Assistant / PhD Student (m/f/d) - Institute for Medical Microbiology

The medical faculty is an integral part of the Otto-von-Guericke-University and cooperates with the University Hospital Magdeburg in research, teaching and patient care. The research profile of the faculty is characterized by the two focal points "Immunology including molecular medicine of inflammation" and "Neurosciences". Approx. 185 students of human medicine and approx. 20 students in the master’s degree in immunology are enrolled every year.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the faculty of microbiology in Magdeburg (Germany) has made substantial contributions to the SARS-CoV-2 virus variant surveillance in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. In order to strengthen the regional pandemic resilience for the current and potentially future pandemics, we are looking for a research assistant / doctoral student (m/f/d) with immediate effect. The project is limited to 3 years (TV-L E13, 65%, approx. ~33-35.000€ p.a.) and is particularly aimed at creating a web platform for data exchange and thus to support regional pandemic surveillance. Flexible research project options according to the applicants skills and interests.

These are your tasks:
• Development of an interactive dashboard for the exchange of data relevant to the pandemic between regional institutions in the state of Saxony-Anhalt (Germany)
• Assisting with routine evaluations of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing and bacterial pathogens
• Further development of existing NGS analysis pipelines
• Researching strategies for characterizing bacterial and viral infections

Your skills:
• University degree in natural sciences, preferably related to bioinformatics (computer science, biology or comparable)
• Interest in working with high-throughput datasets (next-generation sequencing), biological infection issues and web development
• Good programming skills (e.g. R, Python, etc.)
• Experience with next-generation sequencing is an advantage
• Experience in creating dashboards is an advantage
