The Role:

Public Health Ontario is looking to hire a postdoctoral fellow to work on bioinformatic solutions to metagenomic sequencing of syphilis (Treponema pallidum subsp pallidum) genomes. Interested candidates with a doctoral degree in any areas of biology relating to genomics, bioinformatics, and microbiology are encouraged to apply. This position offers and exciting opportunity to gain experience in genomic epidemiology within a public health setting.

Key Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will analyse sequence data generated using a variety of methods and the candidate must have experience processing high throughput or next generation sequence data
Collaborate closely with microbiologist(s) and the principal investigator (PI) to develop pipelines for genomic analysis of Treponema genomes
Organize regular meetings with the research team to share progress and insights, discuss findings, and refine the research objectives and methodologies
Data Management: Organize and maintain a comprehensive sequence database with associated metadata
Analyze and synthesize research findings from various sources to identify key trends, data types, emerging technologies, and gaps in the existing literature
Deadline Adherence: Meet project deadlines and milestones in a timely manner while maintaining the quality and accuracy of the work
Experience with python, SQL, a workflow language (snakemake or nextflow), and/or unix environment is preferred.

Qualifications:

PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., biology, microbiology, pathology, public health, computer science, or a related discipline).
Possibility of renewal contingent upon funding.
