Postdoc in evolutionary dynamics of influenza viruses. Lots of freedom, lots of data, great location.

The job

Applications are invited for a new postdoctoral position in mathematical modelling in the Laboratory of Applied Evolutionary Biology, Department of Medical Microbiology, Academic Medical Center (AMC), University of Amsterdam. This post is part of a Wellcome Trust Collaborative Award to Profs Colin Russell, Wendy Barclay, Steven Riley, and Paul Kellam focused on the within and between host evolution of influenza viruses. The post holder will work most closely with Prof Russell but also be expected to actively engage with all project members.

Over the period of the project we will perform a substantial number of in vitro and in vivo evolution experiments to explore the processes that govern the pace of influenza virus evolution. These experiments will generate tremendous amounts of host and virus data. The post holder will be responsible for developing and analysing mathematical models of within and between host virus dynamics based on these data. The wealth of data in this project combined with your expertise should provide exciting opportunities to make fundamental insights into virus evolution.

Our department

The Department of Medical Microbiology comprises clinical and research laboratories in bacteriology, virology and parasitology (up to BSL3), and also houses the Netherlands Reference Laboratory for Bacterial Meningitis and the Netherlands/OIE/FAO/WHO Reference Laboratory for Leptospirosis. AMC is one of the largest tertiary medical centers in Europe with prime clinical and research foci on infectious diseases and has cutting-edge sequencing and computational facilities.

Your experience

You should have a PhD, preferably in infectious disease dynamics, evolutionary biology, epidemiology, mathematics, statistics, physics, or a related field. In depth experience in statistics and/or developing mathematical models is essential. You should also have good programming skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team. Previous experience in modelling infectious disease dynamics is highly desirable.

We offer

-a fulltime (36-hour/week) position as a Postdoc for 30 months;
-terms of employment according to University Medical Center collective agreements (UMC-CAO);
-monthly salary in scale 10 ranging from EUR 3202,- to EUR 4216,- based on qualifications and experience;
-vacation allowance of 8% and an allowance of 8.3% of the gross yearly salary payable at the end of the year.

Your application

Informal enquiries should be directed to Prof Colin Russell (c.a.russell@amc.uva.nl).

Applicants should submit a CV, a covering letter outlining suitability for the role and motivation, and contact details for three references.
