Postdoc in cholera epidemiology, surveillance, and modeling
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Temple University's College of Public Health seeks a postdoctoral scholar to contribute to projects focused on cholera epidemiology, surveillance, and modeling under the supervision of Dr. Kirsten E. Wiens. Temple University is an urban, research-intensive Carnegie R1 university located in historic and culturally rich Philadelphia, the sixth largest city in the United States. The CEPH-accredited College of Public Health consists of academic units in a broad range of public health disciplines and health professions, enrolling approximately 4,200 students. CPH research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation, Gates Foundation, and other major private foundations, state, and federal agencies.
JOB SUMMARY: The postdoctoral scholar will join the Wiens Lab to work on exciting research projects aiming to: 1) Use serological, clinical, and care-seeking data to estimate the proportion of cholera infections that go unobserved by traditional surveillance systems, 2) Quantify the duration of bacterial shedding in medically-attended cholera cases and in cases that would not normally seek care, and 3) Compare the probability of infection following exposure to symptomatic vs. asymptomatic Vibrio cholerae-infected household contacts. The position includes opportunities to publish peer-reviewed manuscripts, present findings at scientific meetings, develop independent research projects of mutual interest, and apply for grants (postdoc-initiated and collaborative). Ample opportunities will be available to work with collaborators at Temple University, Johns Hopkins University, as well as international partners.
- Develop and apply statistical models to research questions and serve as lead author on publications resulting from their research.
- Collaborate with other members of the research team to disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings as lead or co-author.
- Actively participate in collaborative research meetings.
- Develop new research ideas linked to the general project themes.
- Doctoral degree and research experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or a related quantitative field at time of hire.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in a statistical programming language such as R, Python, or SAS.
- Experience or strong interest in infectious disease modeling and epidemiology.
This position will provide postdoctoral research training, funds for travel to conferences, and a competitive salary and benefits for one year, renewable annually upon satisfactory performance and continued funding. Remote work is possible and a moving stipend will be provided if relocating to Philadelphia.
