Postdoc Computational and Statistical Analysis of Microbiome Data (0.8 - 1.0 FTE)

JOB DESCRIPTION
Research at Clinical Infectiology (KLIF) focuses on zoonotic and foodborne pathogens and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance posing a threat for veterinary and public health. The generation and analysis of sequencing data is part of our daily work for epidemiological analysis, search for virulence and antimicrobial markers, to assess the effects of interventions, and for diagnostics. KLIF offers an international and stimulating work environment at the forefront of scientific research. As a postdoc you will actively participate in our scientific meetings and publish the findings in peer reviewed scientific journals.

You will be responsible for addressing the data analysis challenges arising from the latest advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies, including the analysis of microbiome and resistome data (amplicon, shotgun sequencing and longitudinal experiments), whole genome or single cell sequencing data. You will work together with project leaders and PhD students to answer research questions on the effects of antimicrobial treatments on the microbiome and for assessing the
microbiome and resistome for both epidemiological analyses and for diagnostics. Work is carried out under supervision of a senior bioinformatician. You will thrive in a unique multi-disciplinary environment including veterinarians, biologists, and bioinformaticians, with an opportunity to supervise master students and contribute to teaching and hands-on multiple day workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS
The perfect candidate:
has a PhD degree in Microbiology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistical Genomics, Epidemiology or a related discipline;
has affinity with microbiology and an understanding of microbiome research;
has experience in biostatistical analysis and data interpretation for large data sets;
has experience in R, Python or similar programming languages;
has experience in integrating complex/omics data sets by translating the required handling into custom made programs;
has good communication skills and can present complex operations in simple terms;
has excellent scientific writing skills (fluent in English).

OFFER
We offer a temporary position (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) for one year. A part-time appointment is a possibility. In case of a good performance, extending the employment is one of the possibilities.The gross salary - depending on previous qualifications and experience - ranges between €2,709 and €4,274 (scale 10 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year. In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions (multiple choice model).
