PhD positions in Vancouver, Canada

We are recruiting MSc and PhD students in the Mathematics, Genomics and Prediction in Infection and Evolution (MAGPIE) group at SFU.
We study infectious disease dynamics and evolution with the help of genomic data, using these data to build, test and refine models of transmission and pathogen diversification. We have particular interests in the genomic epidemiology of tuberculosis, and in the population dynamics of diverse pathogens including S. pneumoniae and influenza viruses. The group hosts a range of projects, broadly grouped into three main themes: modelling diverse pathogen populations through time, genomic epidemiology and the mathematics of phylogenetic trees and networks.

Students will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects spanning mathematical modelling, simulation, data analysis and statistical inference, focused on the evolution and dynamics of pathogens. We aim to build models that allow us to use genomic data to design improved infectious disease interventions. Our group has close links with other departments locally and internationally, and we have a track record of ongoing collaboration with Yale, Stanford, Imperial College and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, among others. Students will have opportunities to travel to visit collaborators and to attend workshops and conferences. All of our PhD programs support students with a stipend.

If you are interested, please see https://www.sfu.ca/math/graduate/prospective-students/admissions.html for how to apply, and contact C. Colijn for further information.
