The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Within the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), the Disease Modelling unit and the Human and Animal Health unit are offering a:

PhD position in mathematical epidemiology

The position is in the area of transmission dynamics of dog rabies at the rural-urban interface in Chad in the framework of a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) funded project entitled “Multiscale transmission dynamics of rabies in Africa: The urban-rural interface”, in collaboration with Institut de Recherche en Elevage pour le Développement (IRED) in N’Djamena, Chad.

The successful applicant will be registered for a PhD degree at the University of Basel. The studentships provide support for 3 years with a doctoral salary at the SNF scale. The position is available immediately, but a later starting date is possible by negotiation.

Required qualifications are:
• An MSc degree in mathematics, statistics, or quantitative biology or epidemiology
• Strong mathematical and statistical modelling skills
• Strong programming skills in at least one programming language such as Python, R, C++, or Matlab.
• Very good English speaking and writing skills
• Working knowledge of French is an asset.
• Willingness to work for short periods in N’Djaména, Chad
