PhD position in digital epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance

The Theoretical Biology Group at ETH Zurich invites applications for a new PhD position. The successful candidate will participate in a data mining project on the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) – the ability of microbes to evolve and resist treatment – is rising globally. The cost of antimicrobial resistance is already significant: 700,000 people die each year from drug-resistant infections. In September 2016, the United Nations General Assembly declared AMR “the most urgent global risk”, and mandated its member states to establish national action plans against AMR, including improvements to epidemiological surveillance systems. This research project will focus on the use of online data sources to better characterize the burden of AMR in animals. At ETH Zurich, the successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team of +20 researchers and work under the mentorship of Professor Sebastian Bonhoeffer and Dr Thomas Van Boeckel.

We welcome applicants trained in computer science, applied mathematics, or computational biology with an interest in applying their quantitative skills to model infectious diseases of global importance. For this position, we are particularly interested in candidates with prior experience in web application development (E.g. ruby on rails, Django), text mining, and statistical programming in R or Matlab.
We look forward to receiving your online application including a CV and a 1 page cover letter. The letter should outline how the candidate's background fulfils entry requirements, and how this position relates to future career goals. Review of applications will begin on January 1, 2018. Please submit your application through our online application portal.
