One Health modelling of antimicrobial resistance
The selected candidate will work on a collaborative project on antimicrobial resistance in food production systems located in a FoodNet Canada sentinel site. FoodNet Canada (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/surveillance/foodnet-canada.html) is an active surveillance program implemented to detect trends in the occurrence of food-borne and waterborne diseases and exposure, with the ultimate goal of reducing occurrence and impact. Sentinel sites are established in unique partnerships with local public health units and provincial public health laboratories that include working relationships with the local water, agriculture and retail food sectors, as well as the provincial and federal institutions responsible for public health. Currently, there are three sentinel sites within the system: in Ontario (Middlesex-London Health Unit), British Columbia (Fraser Health Authority), and Alberta (Alberta Health Services: Calgary and Central Zones).
The projects will be looking at the movement of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG) within and between livestock production systems (dairy, swine, and poultry) within a FoodNet sentinel site and when possible, it would be compared with ARG in the human population.
Applicants will need strong expertise in risk and disease transmission models to be able to understand bioinformatics and genomic analyses.
