MS/PhD positions in modeling infectious disease dynamics + evolution (multiple projects)

The Hill lab in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto is accepting applications for Masters (MS, 2 year, research-based) and doctoral (PhD, 4-6 years) students to start Sept 2026. Our lab focuses on understanding the dynamics and evolution of human infectious diseases within individual patients and across populations. We build mathematical models, computational tools, and statistical methods to better predict disease spread and inform interventions. We work closely with experimental biologists, clinicians, and public health agencies and integrate diverse data sources. Potential projects in the lab encompass a range of pathogens such as HIV/AIDS, SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), antibiotic-resistant bacteria, syphilis, cancer causing viruses, and more. Interested students should have a bachelor's degree in any field of science, strong mathematics skills (including some statistics and differential equations), and a demonstrated interest in both basic biology (including ecology & evolution) and medicine/public health. Some experience applying mathematical models to biological systems through coursework or research is highly recommended. Send an email including a brief description of your interest and qualifications, a CV, an unofficial transcript, and the contact information for at least 2 references (no letters needed at this stage) to alison.hill@utoronto.ca. More information on the program and eligibility is available here: https://eeb.utoronto.ca/education/graduate/. Note that MS applications are only open to Canadian permanent residents/citizens, while PhD applications are additionally open to international students.
