Molecular epidemiologist interested in infectious disease epidemiology and developing the use of Minion technology at Roslin
The epidemiology, economics and risk assessment group (www.eeragroup.org) is seeking an enthusiastic and dynamic molecular epidemiologist to join the group as a Research Fellow.
The eera group is a dynamic research group based at the Roslin Institute at the R(D)SVS in Edinburgh. We currently have a number of research projects on major zoonotic and transboundary diseases including studying the epidemiology of bovine TB and its co-infections in Cameroon, the molecular epidemiology of foot-and-mouth disease in Cameroon, studying the disease burden of livestock in Kenya (including developing new sequence based multispecies diagnostic platforms) and projects on surveillance including simulation studies of alternative strategies for TB surveillance in Scotland and of the spread of emerging vector borne diseases in marginal environments.
You are a molecular epidemiologist with a PhD in a relevant area, an experienced molecular laboratory scientist. You will be familiar with managing and phylogenetics analyses of large epidemiological/sequence datasets (particularly BEAST and using scripted statistical software such as R and Python). You should also be able to demonstrate scientific writing ability and outputs through an appropriate level of peer-reviewed publications and be prepared to work for periods in LMICs collecting/supervising data collection. A veterinary or animal biosciences background and familiarity with livestock systems in LMICs, mathematical modeling, and use of advanced statistical techniques would be an advantage.
The job will involve working with the group leader providing molecular laboratory support (in particular developing field based sequencing approaches based around nanopore and Minion technologies), design and supervision of field work and sample collection and analysis including PCR, ELISAs and NGS where appropriate to improve our understanding of the epidemiology of major infectious diseases of livestock focused mainly on LMICs. You will have freedom to explore your own questions and direct analyses within the overall framework of the current projects. You will be expected to support the groups PhD students in their analyses and provide a small amount of undergraduate and MSc teaching. The group has several overseas projects and you will be expected to contribute to the help manage these travelling overseas (including Cameroon, Kenya and India).
You should expect to produce at least 2 first author papers plus several other papers a year. This post is ideal for someone keen to continue in academia and who wants to develop their own fellowship application.
