Modelling if and how Africa can adopt reduced PCV dosing schedules (postdoc)

Research Fellow in Infectious Disease Modelling (PCV)
Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology
Salary: £38,533 to £43,759 per annum, inclusive.
Closing Date: Sunday 05 August 2018
Reference: EPH-IDE-2018-28

Applications are invited for an Infectious Disease Modeller to join the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

The successful candidate will join a large but still growing team of vaccine epidemiologists, modellers and economists at LSHTM working on high profile public health questions relevant across high, middle and low-income settings. The team has recently acquired a number of personal fellowships as well as grant funding including from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in the UK, from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, from the World Health Organization and from ELRHA (Enhancing Learning & Research for Humanitarian Assistance). Following these successes, we are currently recruiting a mathematical modeller at research fellow level.

The post holder’s main responsibility will be to investigate the circumstances under which African countries could move from a 3-dose PCV infancy schedule to a cost saving 2-dose schedule with one dose in early infancy and a booster dose given towards the end of the first year of life. The post holder will also support and collaborate with other partners and early career researchers (e.g. PhD students) within the Mucosal Pathogen Research Unit (MPRU) to undertake modelling projects that address the aims of the Unit. Occasional travel (mainly to collaborators in Gambia, South Africa, Malawi and Kenya) will be required.

The successful candidate will be required to have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline (with a strong quantitative component), or a relevant Master’s degree with substantial experience. The ability to demonstrate high-quality writing skills for publications as well as experience in constructing mathematical models of infectious diseases are essential. Experience in understanding and analysing epidemiological data is also essential.

The post is available full-time from 3rd September 2018 and is currently funded for 22 months. The appointment will be made on the School’s Research Fellow scale Grade 6, in the range of £38,533 to £43,759 per annum (inclusive of London weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Days”. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.

Applications should be made on-line via our website jobs.lshtm.ac.uk. The reference for this post is EPH-IDE-2018-28. Applications should include the names and email contacts of 2 referees who can be contacted immediately if shortlisted.
