Mathematical modelling of infection and immunity

Research Fellow in Mathematical Modelling

Faculty of Epidemiology & Population Health

Salary: £38,533 to £43,759 per annum, inclusive.
Closing Date: Monday 04 December 2017
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: EPH-IDE-70
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated infectious disease modeller to join the world-leading Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).

The successful candidate will combine mathematical models with novel surveillance and serological data to examine the dynamics of infection and immunity for antigenically variable pathogens such as influenza and dengue. As well as investigating individual-level cross-reactive antibody responses to such viruses, the work aims to predict how these responses shape pathogen invasion and transmission at the population level. This will involve the development and parameterisation of a range of dynamic models and will make use of some of the best available data for influenza and flaviviruses, including field studies of dengue and Zika from the Western Pacific.

The post-holder will be supervised by Dr Adam Kucharski, and will join a highly successful and supportive modelling group, with considerable scope to develop their own research within the field, in collaboration with colleagues at LSHTM and international partners. It is expected that the project will involve a range of complex and original scientific research that requires a high degree of personal motivation.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in mathematical modelling, statistics, epidemiology or another relevant discipline with a strong quantitative component. Candidates should also demonstrate experience in mathematical modelling, preferably on infectious diseases, and have a promising publication record.

The post is available immediately and is funded until 31st January 2020. Salary will be on the Academic Grade 6 scale in the range £38,533 - £43,759 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.

Applications should be made on-line via our website jobs.lshtm.ac.uk. The reference for this post is EPH-IDE-70. Applications should include the names and email contacts of 2 referees who can be contacted immediately if shortlisted. Any queries regarding the application process may be addressed to jobs@lshtm.ac.uk.

The supporting statement section should set out how your qualifications, experience and training meet each of the selection criteria. Please provide one or more paragraphs addressing each criterion. The supporting statement is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as "Please see attached CV" will not be considered acceptable.

Please note that if you are shortlisted and are unable to attend on the interview date it may not be possible to offer you an alternative date.
