Mathematical Modeller (senior postdoctoral role) to co-lead the calibration and validation of our cutting-edge malaria simulation models

We are seeking a Mathematical Modeller for individual-based model calibration to join the Global Disease Modelling team of Professor Melissa Penny at The Kids Research Institute Australia. In this role, you will collaborate with leading researchers, software developers, and global health partners to co-lead the calibration, validation, and enhancement of an established malaria transmission model.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge modelling and simulation tools that directly inform malaria intervention strategies and global health policy. You will play a key role in advancing modelling frameworks, integrating new data sources, and delivering high-quality research outputs for international stakeholders.

Your duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Develop and enhance mathematical and statistical models of malaria transmission and interventions.
  • Design scalable, efficient modelling and data analysis workflows, integrating new data sources.
  • Apply advanced statistical, optimisation, and machine learning methods to calibrate disease models to diverse data
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including epidemiologists, developers, and global partners.
  • Prepare publications and reports, while maintaining high standards of data and code management.

This is a full-time, ongoing opportunity based at our offices in Nedlands (Perth).

ABOUT YOU
To be successful in this role, you will possess the following:

  • A PhD (or equivalent experience) in statistics, mathematics, mathematical modelling, or a related quantitative discipline.
  • Strong expertise in statistical modelling, including areas such as Bayesian methods, simulation modelling, optimisation, or machine learning.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis, algorithm development, and numerical methods.
  • Proficiency in programming (Python and/or R) and experience with high-performance computing.
  • Ability to design models that represent complex real-world systems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including scientific writing and publication experience.
