Mathematical Modeller applying statistical and mathematical modelling to improve decision-making and responses to public health emergencies

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and competent mathematical modeller to join our modelling team to support the National Institute of Health Research Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) project in Modelling Methodology. This project is a collaboration with Imperial College London. The post will sit within the highly multidisciplinary Emergency Response Science and Technology Group (ERD S&T) at Porton Down. This group exists to provide high quality scientific advice to government on new and emerging infectious disease threats to public health and how their impact may be successfully mitigated.

This role will:
•Undertake vital research and provide specialist expertise in the application of inferential statistical and mathematical modelling methods to investigate practical emergency planning and response objectives, improving decision making and operational responses to public health emergencies.
•Support the technical goals of the National Institute of Health Research Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Modelling Methodology and specifically its Emerging Threats Theme. The HPRU is led by Professor Neil Ferguson, Imperial College London, which jointly with PHE, provides the complementary strengths of two of the largest and most diverse teams of infectious disease modellers in the UK, with the aim to deliver a step change in research capacity available for health protection modelling.
•Be part of an integrated multidisciplinary team that includes infectious disease biologists and epidemiologists, mathematical modellers, behavioural scientists, and specialists in geographic information systems and scientific computing.

Your background:
•With a PhD in mathematics or statistics or another highly quantitative discipline (or significant experience of working at a similar level in specialist area), you will have the necessary advanced mathematical/statistical/operational research skills and experience to create and apply models to novel datasets such as might be applied to investigating infectious disease dynamics that potentially include such factors as population movements (directly and indirectly from individuals), disease vector distributions as well as collection/storage of such data.
•You will be a team player with excellent mathematical background, good report writing and some programming experience and awareness of modelling infectious disease processes.
•Proactively identify opportunities to improve use of data and ability to meet internal and external customer requirements
•Develop and promote effective working relationships within the team and especially with key external customers
•Ability to communicate clearly (verbal and written)
