Mathematical and economic modelling of One Health interventions

The LSHTM Agriculture and Infectious Disease group studies the effects of changing agricultural and food systems on human infectious diseases. Agriculture and the food systems that it supports are essential for human health, but sometimes agricultural activities and environments can generate unintended health side-effects. Our research programme involves a unique collaboration between a public health institution and the international agricultural research centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and focuses on One Heath projects in Africa and Asia.

As part of this collaboration, LSHTM is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Fellow to undertake research on the potential impact of interventions to reduce effects of agricultural practices on human infectious diseases in low and middle income countries (LMICs). The Postdoctoral Fellow will undertake research to evaluate and model the epidemiological and economic consequences of these interventions on both human health and agricultural outcomes. Our principle focus is on antimlcrobial resistance (AMR), where we are developing modelling approaches to describe economic outcomes for human health and agriculture arising from interventions to reduce AMR risks from livestock production. However, depending on their interests and skills, the Postdoctoral Fellow may work on other projects in our group, or on a range of projects. Other projects include a One Health economic evaluation of rice-field irrigation strategies in Africa that optimize rice productivity while minimizing malaria risk, and an epidemiological and economic approach to measuring how food system dynamics interacts with COVID-19 interventions in LMICs.

Candidates must have a PhD (or similar experience) in public health epidemiology or economics, as well as demonstrable experience or interest in mathematical modelling of infectious diseases and working with large health data relating to AMR and health economic analysis and/or burden estimation. Experience working on data from low and middle income countries would be an advantage. Further particulars are included in the job description.

This post is full time and is available from January 2021 to 31 December 2021. Salary will be on the Academic Grade 6 scale in the range of £40,011 - £45,347 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting).
