Lectureship/Senior Lectureship in Applied Mathematics
We are seeking to appointment a lecturer or senior lecturer (Grades J, K or L) in the area of Applied Mathematics, including, but not limited to mathematics applied to the life sciences. This is a permanent (open ended) post. Engineering Mathematics is a unique and successful department with a vibrant and diverse group of staff (circa 50) undertaking research and teaching across Applied Mathematics, Data Science and Robotics. You will be joining the newly merged Engineering Mathematics Research Group which comprises the Applied Mathematics half of the department with world leading research interests across synthetic and computational biology, nonlinear dynamical systems, solid and soft mechanics, infectious disease modelling, among other areas. For example, Dr Lucia Marucci is Associate Director of the cross-campus initiative in Bristol Synthetic Biology; the department has strong links with the UK Alan Turing Institute (ATI) for data science, with 5 fellows (among 40 at the University); and Prof Alan Champneys is Chair of the Scientific Advisory Panel of the Isaac Newton Institute’s Gateway to Mathematics and helped launch the Virtual Knowledge Exchange in Mathematical Sciences (VKEMS). Engineering Mathematics is committed to diversity and equality and we would especially encourage women or those from under-represented communities to apply. The post is available on a part-time or flexible basis if required
What will you be doing?
The postholder will carry out teaching in mathematics and related topics to support our undergraduate and masters’ programmes in Engineering Mathematics and well as to various interdisciplinary programmes in across the faculty of engineering. A particular feature of the programmes in Engineering Mathematics are the small-group mathematical and data modelling classes, well as the empathetic teaching of core mathematics and computing to non-specialists. You will also be expected to collaboratively generate high quality research publications in the leading journals in your field, to apply for research funding, supervise PhD students, and establish a growing international reputation for research within your team.
You should apply if
You should have relevant experience of teaching and research in any area related to this post, as is commensurate with your career stage. You should have a good honours degree and a PhD in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related discipline. You should have good spoken and written English, and a strong commitment to improving Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
