Lecturer (x2)/Senior Lecturer (x2) in applied mathematics and AI at Lancaster University

The School of Mathematical Sciences at Lancaster University is seeking to appoint 4 new academic posts under a new £15M investment in “MARS: Mathematics for AI in Real-world Systems”. These posts are the first of a new 10FTE academic unit within the School, which is supported by an initial 5 years of pump-priming funding. This unit will conduct research and teaching at the interface of dynamical modelling and AI, with a focus on methodological mathematics supporting application areas. Strong applicants will be expected to have an application focus in areas including (though not limited to): epidemic modelling; systems modelling in biological, environmental, and ecological systems; areas of manufacturing and materials engineering; and cybersecurity applications.

MARS is an exciting new initiative at Lancaster University, expanding on our excellence in impactful and industrially engaged research. These new academic posts, which are supported by research staff and PhD students, will enable MARS to revolutionise Lancaster’s research capacity in mathematics, connecting dynamical systems modelling and AI methods to support flagship strategies in the applied sciences of Health, Environmental Science, Manufacturing, and Cybersecurity. To accompany this research, we will develop new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, providing opportunities to address a major skills-gap in modern approaches to modelling real-world systems. These activities will reach out to industry and government partners as regional, national, and global initiatives in next-generation mathematics. Backed by Research England, MARS will become a unique national capability in the Northwest, pushing the boundaries of AI-driven modelling to tackle key challenges in the modern world.

If you work in applied mathematics and/or theory of AI with strong real-world applications, one of these posts might be for you! We are hiring at Senior Lecturer and Lecturer level, with further details available at:
