Infectious Disease Epidemiologist

Are you a result-oriented individual with strong analytical skills looking to put your expertise to good use? If so, the Analytics and Performance Reporting Branch is seeking an Epidemiologist to provide high quality evidence to support public health policy development related to immunization and communicable diseases, including supporting Alberta's COVID-19 response.

Reporting to the Manager, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, you work closely with public health professionals, data analysts, and external stakeholders to analyze, interpret and disseminate information regarding communicable disease and immunization including assessing the burden of vaccine preventable diseases, vaccine effectiveness and safety in Alberta. The position also plays a key support role for responding to threats to public health from emerging pathogens. You support the ministry's public health surveillance functions by developing networks and working collaboratively with other members of the Health Standards, Quality and Performance Division and the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health. Using epidemiologic analysis tools to monitor and analyze data, you will synthesize relevant data to provide recommendations and an understanding of the provincial and regional framework for developing public health policy. With systems thinking and agility, you will produce epidemiological reports and data products that respond to data requests related to COVID-19, surveillance reports, and immunization coverage. Your excellent communication skills is essential to this position, as you will be writing ministerial correspondence such as briefing notes, and reports as needed.

This position actively promotes and contributes to the effective use of public health surveillance information in priority setting, quality assurance, and knowledge creation activities for internal and external stakeholders in the health sector including Alberta Health Services, Federal agencies, and academic collaborators.

Qualifications
A University Degree in a related field (Epidemiology, Statistics, Data Science, Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, Engineering, or in a related Health discipline with a strong analytical focus), and a minimum of four (4) years of progressively related work experience is required.

Required experience includes:

Data exploration, analysis and interpretation
Data management
Experience working with statistical models, machine learning, data visualization, and/or using epidemiological methods
Statistical programs (e.g. R, SQL and/or SAS)

Preferences will be given to candidates who possess the following:

Demonstrated continued professional development and/or self-directed learning related to analytics
Experience working in collaborative environments related to analytics (e.g. version control and reproducibility)

The following experience is considered an asset:

Demonstrated ability to communicate results to key stakeholders
Master’s Degree in a related field
