Improve pandemic preparedness with a modelling framework for which vaccine trials work best for which pathogen and context. Job 2/2: math modelling.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Infectious Disease Modelling to join the experienced multidisciplinary PRESTO team within the Pandemic Sciences Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine. The PRESTO study is funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). It aims to simulate outbreaks of epidemic versions of CEPI’s priority pathogens to develop and pre-file protocols for phase III vaccine trials or real-world efficacy studies before an outbreak occurs.

In this project we will help design vaccine efficacy trials and real-world effectiveness studies which can be completed quickly, thus supporting the 100-day mission. You will be responsible for building a modelling framework for vaccine trial simulations and developing and adopting simulation methods, computer code, and error-checking methods for the project. You will be tasked with testing hypotheses and analysing data from various public and confidential sources, reviewing and refining working hypotheses. You will also be responsible for actively managing collaboration with colleagues working on the projects, both within the Pathogen Dynamics group at Oxford and more broadly.

To be successful in this role you will hold a PhD DPhil (or close to completion) in infectious disease modelling, applied computing, applied mathematics, statistics, epidemiology, or relevant quantitative science, together with relevant experience in modelling or simulation science. You will have sufficient specialist knowledge in infectious disease modelling, epidemiology, or simulation science to work within established research programs. You will be able to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget, as well as have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and represent the research group at meetings.

This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract until for 2 years and is funded by CEPI.
