Genomic and epidemiological analysis of bacterial isolates to tackle antimicrobial resistance in Tanzania.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant/Associate to work within an MRC-funded project "Supporting the National Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance (SNAP-AMR) in Tanzania".

The post-holder will analyse next generation sequencing (NGS) data of bacterial isolates collected primarily in hospital settings in order to support epidemiological inference about the source of antimicrobial resistance in the hospital system and to provide input into epidemiological models of the transmission of resistant infections. The focus organisms are E. coli and Klebsiella, in particular ESBL E. coli and Klebsiella, which are a serious problem worldwide and major source of morbidity and mortality among hospital patients in Tanzania.

The post-holder will have expert knowledge of genomic/bioinformatic data analysis and have some familiarity with mathematical modelling of epidemiological data. On a day to day basis, the post-holder will work closely with microbiologist Dr Katarina Oravcova and epidemiological modeller Professor Louise Matthews whilst interacting and collaborating where appropriate with the economic and social science project work strands.
