Development of epidemiological and economic One Health models to explore the impact of interventions against antimicrobial resistance
Summary
Understanding how best to tackle the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the global public health priorities of our time. In this project we will take a One Health approach to consider how antibiotic stewardship interventions at the farm level could impact on number of infections with resistant bacteria in humans. As part of the new international SEFASI consortium (Denmark, England, Senegal), this position will develop a combined economic and epidemiological mathematical framework to assess the past and likely impact of interventions against AMR in these settings. This position would suit someone with an infectious disease modelling background looking to gain economic evaluation experience, or vice versa. The researcher would work closely with Dr Gwen Knight (LSHTM) and Dr Nichola Naylor (UKHSA), joining the group of researchers working on AMR dynamics with Dr Knight, but interacting frequently with the wider consortium.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health and health equity in the UK and worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice.
Applications are invited for an infectious disease modeller and/or economist to join the Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The post holder will use mathematical and economic modelling to explore the impact of antibiotic stewardship interventions implemented at the farm level against the spread of antimicrobial resistance across humans and livestock.
This position is for a Research Assistant or Research Fellow based at LSHTM and responsible to Dr Gwen Knight, who will work closely with the new SEFASI consortium of researchers at the UK Health Security Agency (Dr. Nichola Naylor), Royal Veterinary College, University of Copenhagen and International Livestock Research Institute.
The successful applicant will have a good quantitative background and experience in infectious disease research. This is a great opportunity for those seeking to enhance their skillset to span both infectious disease modelling and economic evaluation. Further particulars are in the job description.
The post is full time and fixed-term until 31st December 2024. The post is funded by the MRC within the JPIAMR HARISSA initiative under the SEFASI grant and is available immediately.
The salary will be on the Academic Pathway Grade 5 in the range of £35,377- £40,611 (Research Assistant) or Grade 6 in the range of £40,611-£46,119 (Research Fellow) per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available. The post is based in London at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
