Branch Chief - Predict Division

CDC has established the Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics (CFA) to advance U.S. public health response, forecasting, and surveillance capacity for outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. The functions of CFA are (1) Predict: Generating forecasts and analyses to support outbreak preparedness and response efforts, (2) Inform: Sharing timely, actionable information with the Federal government; STLT leaders, and the public, and (3) Innovate: Supporting research and development to improve outbreak forecasts and analyses. Within Predict, CFA is building a world-class modeling and data science team to solve some of the most challenging outbreak science problems.

This position will function as a Branch Chief in the Predict Division and will have primary responsibility for planning, directing, evaluating, and coordinating Predict’s activities across a range of quantitative activities including nowcasting, forecasting, scenario-based modeling, and outbreak analytics that aim to inform decision-making during emergency responses. This position could be appropriate for an associate or full professor interested in transitioning into a leadership and programmatic role within CFA.
As a Branch Chief in Predict you will:
• Direct the activities of multiple teams that are developing and implementing advanced computational models to simulate and forecast infectious disease transmission processes and estimate key epidemic parameters from data
• Establish vision, goals, priorities, and performance standards of the organization
• Provide expert consultation and advice to Division and Center Directors in computational epidemiology and the application of sound statistical and epidemiological principles in the analysis of public health data
• Collaborate with leaders and scientists from Centers, Institutes, and Offices across CDC to integrate CFA’s modeling and simulation activities into regular practice
• Demonstrate expertise and attention to detail while leading high-profile modeling projects with real-world impacts
• Promote the use of state-of-the-art technology, enterprise-grade software development practices, and advanced modeling workflows that embrace open science while ensuring the scientific integrity, reproducibility, and validity of the outputs
