A 4-year fully-funded PhD on COVID-19 immunological and epidemiological dynamics.
This is a GW4 PhD project, based at the University of Bristol, collaborating with the University of Exeter.
The exact project can be tailored to suit individual interests, but the broad aim is to use immunological data to build improved, parsimonious models of COVID immunity and epidemic dynamics. The objectives, which will be developed and tailored according to individual interests are:
- Develop mathematical descriptions of infection and immune dynamics within individuals using new immunological data.
- Explore alternative models of epidemic dynamics that capture immunity, while being calibrated to population-level surveillance data.
- Investigate long-term vaccine strategies based a solid understanding of the underlying biological processes.
The PhD is fully-funded for 4 years and the student will receive training and support. The foundation of this PhD is infectious disease modelling, therefore it would suit someone with strong quantitative/mathematical skills (a good degree in Maths/Stats/Physics or similar quantitative subject, coding experience is an advantage), together with a keen interest in public health, biological processes and science policy.
Applications can be made via the GW4 BioMed2 website: https://www.gw4biomed.ac.uk. The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday, 26th November 2021. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an informal interview (over the phone, on Skype or Zoom) with the supervisor(s) (Dr Ellen Brooks-Pollock) between Monday 31st January 2022 and Friday 11th February 2022. The formal interviews will be held virtually on the 16th and 17th February 2022.
