About SACEMA: Founded in 2006, SACEMA is a national Centre of Excellence funded by the South African Department of Science and Technology, managed by the National Research Foundation, and hosted at Stellenbosch University in South Africa’s beautiful Western Cape. As Africa's leaders in disease dynamics, we are quantitative scientists who are passionate about conducting research to improve health in Africa. Trained as mathematicians, biologists, physicists, economists, statisticians, and epidemiologists, we bridge disciplines to understand disease dynamics and improve real-world outcomes. Broadly, we focus on research at two scales. At the scale of individual patients, we focus on biomarkers, drug targets, and diagnostics. Under this focus, we have two primary research themes: biochemical pathways to disease and measuring infection: incidence, prevalence, and progression. At the population scale, we focus on transmission dynamics and interventions. The primary research themes under this focus are endemic infections of national priority (HIV, TB, STIs) and outbreaks, zoonoses, and emerging infections. We also build local and international capacity in epidemiological modelling and analysis by training postgraduate researchers to work across disciplines and across borders, and through workshops and short courses that build skills across sectors.
