Research fellow position to model how respiratory virus infections impact GP practices during winter across socioeconomic groups.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and productive mathematical modeler with an interest in learning new skills and in working with colleagues with a range of epidemiological backgrounds to advance the research agenda on health inequalities in England.

The post-holder will join a supportive team using OpenSAFELY for analysis of linked EHR data. This post is funded by a large NIHR grant examining socioeconomic and ethnic inequalities in respiratory virus transmission in England. The project aims to understand how respiratory virus infections can exert service pressures on GP practices during winter and if those are evenly distributed across practices and patient groups. The role of vaccination in mitigating these pressures will be a major focus of the project.

The post-holder will be directly responsible for designing and extending existing transmission models for influenza, Covid-19 and RSV to include stratification by socioeconomic status and ethnicity. The post-holder will fit the models to infection outcomes drawn from electronic health records data in OpenSAFELY, and estimate the effect of differences in vaccination coverage between strata on health impact from these infections. The post-holder will then compare the impact of different vaccination strategies in mitigating differences between strata. Finally, the post-holder will use the model outcomes to explore the cost-effectiveness of the different vaccination strategies.

The post-holder will work directly with Dr Edwin van Leeuwen (who is interim work package lead) and Dr Rosalind Eggo, and with a team of epidemiologists, modellers, statisticians and data scientists at LSHTM, QMUL, Bristol and Oxford Universities. There will be excellent opportunities for publication, for collaboration and for participation in future grant applications and outputs crucial to public health decisions.
