The Role:
Public Health Ontario is looking to hire a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join our research team and contribute to the comprehensive study of Treponema pallidum subsp pallidum, a causative agent of Syphilis. The successful candidate will conduct research in advancing our understanding of this pathogen through a multidisciplinary approach that combines comparative genomics, bioinformatics, and machine learning. This position offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience in the applied genomic epidemiology within a public health setting.

Key Responsibilities:
Investigate pathogen evolution, epidemiology, and potential diagnostic or vaccine biomarkers by mining Treponema genomes.
Collaboration: Collaborate closely with project team and the principal investigator (PI) and organize regular meetings with the research team to share progress and insights, discuss findings, and refine the research objectives and methodologies.
Data Management: Organize and maintain a comprehensive sequence database with associated metadata.
Scientific Research and Writing: Analyze and synthesize research findings from various sources to identify key trends, data types, emerging technologies, and gaps in the existing literature.
Deadline Adherence: Meet project deadlines and milestones in a timely manner while maintaining the quality and accuracy of the work.
Technical Proficiency: Experience with python, R, a workflow language (snakemake or nextflow, nextclade), and Unix environment is preferred.

Qualifications:
PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., biology, microbiology, pathology, public health, computational biology, mathematical biology, computer science, or a related discipline).
Training or work experience in computational biology or bioinformatics is a plus
Excellent scientific and written communication skills
Possibility of renewal contingent upon funding.
