Educational Expert for the development of Online research tools and services in support of Epidemic models

The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) is a cutting-edge institute addressing global public health challenges through research, translation into policy and education. ISGlobal has a broad portfolio in communicable and non-communicable diseases including environmental and climate determinants, and applies a multidisciplinary scientific approach ranging from the molecular to the population level. Research is organized in the following main areas, Malaria and other Infectious Diseases, Maternal, Child and reproductive Health, Urban Health and Child and environmental health, Climate & Non-Communicable Diseases. ISGlobal is accredited with the Severo Ochoa distinction, a seal of excellence of the Spanish Science Ministry.
The Climate and Health Program at ISGlobal focuses as one of its main research lines, on the development of computational models for climate-driven sensitive diseases in low-and-middle income countries (LMIC). Examples are the epidemic outbreaks of cholera, malaria and arboviral diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika in Africa, southeast Asia and the Americas, but also the prevention of potential importation to Europe of such diseases by infected travellers. To this end, scientists at the Program formerly developed in 2019 a mathematical model platform for Catalonia (ARBOCAT), aimed at predicting the local outbreaks of arboviral diseases. Now, the Wellcome Trust (WT) Foundation funded the implementation of a similar modelling tool for the 77 provinces in Thailand and Bangkok.
Venue:
Barcelona
What We Are Looking for:
ISGlobal is seeking an experienced educational expert, with solid knowledge in biology and who has proven skills and experience in the development of online educational tools for the objective of raising awareness on infectious diseases epidemics and the role of vectors and the environment in LMIC countries in tropical settings. The educational part seeks to complement the implementation of an Early-Warning System tailored to anticipating dengue epidemics in Thailand. The overall project goal is the migration of a computational platform similar to ARBOCAT (www.arbocat.cat) to Thailand. To this end, relevant information for this computational model is needed on vector distribution and the environmental conditions favouring mosquito proliferation in urban habitats. These are the specific tasks to be developed by the educational expert, that is to develop a specific educational curriculum that can be smoothly interspersed with the normal teaching materials in schools in Bangkok, fully aligned with the normal school development. The online material to be taught in classes at high-school level aims at both raising awareness on factors facilitating mosquito proliferation, as well as through citizen science activities with school teens, to derive real scientific data on mosquito abundance and environmental parameters. Such data, routinely and carefully collected at their homes and schools will provide crucial information for the modelling experts.
What we are specifically seeking in candidates:
-A BSc in Biology, environmental sciences or related disciplines. PhD holders will be prioritised.

-Knowledge of the microbiology or epidemiology of target pathogens will be valued as tools should have a solid scientific component.

-Minimum of ten years’ certified experience as high-school teacher in the Catalan/Spanish educational system.
-Preferably in complex educational environments (diversity and global teaching methodologies, certificates needed).
-Certified competences on TIC tools (e.g., official accreditation of ACTIC level 3), and expertise in the preparation and development of online materials and tools (e.g., A1 level...).
-Proven development of online educational materials and technological services/resources for high-school teaching (Moodle, Google Classroom...)
-High English language command (minimum certified level equivalent to B2) and also teaching competences applied to the education field (e.g. AICLE)
-Experience in cooperative work in school environments, preferably in the science domains.
-Certified experience in the development of high-school strategic plans, in particular science thematic plans.

What we offer:
-A 2-year contract (1+1) at a postdoctoral level A (equivalent to a gross salary of 36.311€, if the selected candidate holds a PhD) or equivalent depending on maturity level.
-Starting date of September 1st, 2023 or as soon as possible afterwards.
-Flexibility in working conditions (remote working conditions possible).
-A friendly working environment and promotion possibilities.

The project is a Wellcome Trust WT Discretionary Award - Data for Science and Health, (Project Code: 226429/Z/22/Z)
