Multiple postdocs in infectious disease epidemiology and modeling - COVID-19, influenza, RSV, malaria, cholera, HIV, AMR, and emerging infections

We are seeking multiple motivated PhD-level postdoctoral researchers to join the Johns Hopkins Infectious Disease Dynamics (IDD) Group to contribute to multiple infectious disease epidemiology and modeling efforts. IDD is a highly collaborative interdisciplinary group of faculty, researchers, postdocs, and students working to better understand infectious diseases globally. Our members come from across Johns Hopkins University, including Epidemiology, International Health, Medicine, Infectious Disease, Emergency Medicine, Pathology, and Biomedical and Systems Engineering. Our group has a strong history of high impact work in research and public health outbreak response.

We have multiple opportunities on several projects and are seeking candidates interested in one or multiple of the following. These projects are funded by the CDC, NSF, NIH, BMGF, and Gavi:

  • Prediction modeling (i.e., forecasting and scenario modeling) of COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and vector-borne pathogens at local, hospital, state, and national scales, and contributing to the multi-model hubs (e.g., COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub, Forecast Hub)
  • Characterizing the dynamics of influenza and RSV and the impact of vaccination strategies
  • Human mobility modeling
  • Modeling the impact of alternative vaccination strategies for measles and cholera
  • Integrating human behavior modeling with transmission modeling such as human mobility data and contact data
  • Developing new methods and tools to utilize serologic data to understand disease transmission, burden, and risk
Integration of machine learning methods with mechanistic transmission models to improve model fitting and extend model results to diverse geographic scales
  • Coordination and analysis of a new pilot online cohort to improve our understanding of infectious disease transmission and human behavior
  • Linking within-host and population-level models for new therapeutics for HIV/AIDS
  • Developing models for the transmission and control of antimicrobial resistant infections in hospital settings
  • Coordination and analysis of a randomized clinical trial to improve our understanding of integrated HIV/curable STI diagnostic testing on HIV epidemic control

These postdocs will work in collaboration with Shaun Truelove, Amy Wesolowski, Alison Hill, Lauren Gardner, Saki Takahashi, Sonia Hegde, Eili Klien, Andrew Azman and Kate Grabowski at JHU as well as collaborators at UNC, including Justin Lessler and Kim Powers, and University of Florida, including Derek Cummings. These postdocs will also have the opportunity to be part of the new CFA-funded Atlantic Coast Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics and Analytics (ACCIDDA), one of 13 new centers part of Insight Net.

The successful candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • PhD and research experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, mathematics, engineering, or a related field
  • Experience conducting research, scientific, medical, or academic projects
  • Experience applying mathematical models to biological systems
  • Experience working in a collaborative research team environment
  • High level of experience in R and/or Python
  • Highly motivated, organized, and comfortable leading projects to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated competency in liaising between multiple project leads and institutions

Successful candidates are expected to be based in Baltimore, MD, though remote work may be possible on a case by case basis. Candidates have the option to work across multiple different projects and to develop independent projects. Position renewable for up to 5 years depending on satisfactory progress and funding specifics. Opportunities for internal promotion after 2+ years. Competitive salary and benefits.

Interested candidates should send their CV/resume and cover letter to Erica Carcelen (ecarcel1@jhu.edu). Applications accepted on a rolling basis, positions open until filled.
